Is Global Warming A Fake Issue?

By Lee Larossier

One must be careful when taking a side on the question, "Is global warming real?" because of the very divisive nature of the topic. The science world is split in two over the changing climate of the planet while the political world has latched onto it as a platform issue as well. There numerous stances that one can take.

Believers in the dangers of this issue are primarily concerned with the rising temperature of the earth over time. This has and can potentially continue to cause devastating effects such as the melting of the polar ice caps--which leads to a rise in sea level--and threats to the populations of species in Antarctica. Although the increase happens in small increments, its effects are massive.

Greenhouse gas emissions are the number one cause, according to this side of the argument. Humans can cause carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide to be released into the air with everyday activities. These can include using a car that burns fossil fuels, running factories, or producing electricity. The molecules trap heat and can cause the atmospheric temperature to slowly rise.

However, there is another side to the argument. Some noted scientists and a growing number of individuals believe that planet is not continuously warming. Rather, they claim that the earth goes through natural cycles of heating and cooling. Many influential people are reluctant to face this fact because of the money-making nature of the issue and its ability to influence politics.

According to their research, the earth has not, in fact, increased in temperature since 1997. And, the overall increase over the past twenty-two years has been much smaller than projected. These minor fluctuations can be attributed to natural solar cycles that the planet goes through and not necessarily to the emission of carbon dioxide, which is actually a vital gas for the planet's health.

When attempting to answer the question, "Is global warming real?" one must pay close attention to the research of both sides. The answer is not black and white and may not be for many tears to come. The best one can do is make an educated decision based on evidence.

About This Blog

Global warming is when the earth heats up (the temperature rises). It happens when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This hurts many people, animals, and plants. Many cannot take the change, so they die
